When January and May roll around there are some in Salemtowne who look forward to "going to trial" - Mock Trial that is - at Willamette University. For at least twenty years residents from Salemtowne and Capitol Manor (another senior community in Salem), along with students from one of Salem's high schools, have been invited to participate in the Trial Practice course at Willamette University. This course is chosen by law students who wish to have experience in conducting a trial before a judge and jury. One of the attractions for the participants is the wonderful food. There are pastries and hot drinks served before the sessions begin and at breaks. When the trials are concluded and the juries come back with their verdict, all participants are furnished a sumptuous luncheon. At this time the law students mingle with the juries and are able to get feedback about their presentations. The trial judges are sitting judges from various localities. There are multiple trials taking place at the same time to accommodate the number of students in a class. Many Salemtowne residents have enjoyed the experience and look forward to the next opportunity.
