The handsome wooden markers you see on almost every Oregon highway give travelers a picture of local history or geology. The signs eventually fall victim to the harsh weather conditions, and that's where the Historical Marker Committee comes in. They pick up the decaying signs, bring them to their workshop located at Salemtowne, and restore them to "like new" condition. The final step is to truck the heavy signs back to their destination, where an Oregon Department of Transportation crew meets them with the equipment needed to put the signs in place. The committee also restores and replaces markers for other entities, such as the City of Salem. Wayne Sharp, head of the thirteen member committee, has an album of pictures of the signs this group has restored since 1995. The group has been honored by the Oregon Travel Information Council for their work. We're proud to be able to say that Salemtowne plays an important role in keeping this history alive.
